The CV Tweaks That Turned a Job Search Around

June 27, 2025

Gybe Consulting met with a candidate this week who had been made redundant and was back on the job market. After reviewing their CV, targeted feedback was provided.

This week, they shared the exciting news that they have landed a great new role. The journey to securing this role has been an interesting one and there are tips that may help other candidates in the same situation;

  • Tailor your resume, keep it succinct: Long, detailed resumes (6–8 pages) often get ignored — a sharp, focused resume that tells a clear story is more effective.
  • Avoid generic AI-generated cover letters: Tools like ChatGPT can help, but unedited outputs can appear robotic. Personalise your applications to avoid being dismissed.
  • The cover letter earns the read, the resume earns the interview: Think of it as a funnel, each stage should clearly and simply lead to the next.
  • Be cautious with advice, even from recruiters: Not all tips work for every role, always consider your audience (often HR or Talent acquisition) and focus on making their job easier.
