Gybe Fortnight: attention, trust and the business of content

Welcome to this edition of Gybe Fortnight - our round-up of what's moving in the marketing, digital and sales market, the roles and talent we're working with, and the headlines worth your attention.

Market overview

Mid-level marketing hiring has picked up, while the senior market remains relatively quiet with fewer executive opportunities than we've historically seen. Businesses are taking a considered approach to team structure, using natural attrition to reshape roles rather than simply replace them. Even with restructures and redundancies happening alongside new hiring, Brisbane's growth trajectory toward 2032 keeps the outlook positive for the second half of the year.

Insight of the fortnight: a fortnight in four themes

As Taylor Swift might say, there's been a lot going on. Between a World Cup final, a couple of cyber incidents, fresh AI research and the Effie finalists, the last two weeks came down to four themes: attention, trust, technology and the increasingly complicated business of content.

  • Attention. Spain's win over Argentina reached almost 5.3 million Australians on SBS, with more than 64% of the country watching some of the tournament. When something genuinely earns attention at that scale, everything around it benefits.
  • Trust. Origin Energy investigated a cyber incident involving customer data, and Tabcorp was fined $2.7 million for spam law breaches. Trust remains one of the most valuable assets a brand can build, and one of the easiest to lose.
  • Technology. We all wanted AI to make content faster. We're now entering the slightly less fun phase, where the conversation shifts from speed to ownership and compensation - the Australian Centre for AI in Marketing released a benchmark report, and the major publishers openly debated AI's impact on journalism, IP and the value of content.
  • Content. The 2026 Effie finalists were announced, a reminder that effectiveness matters more than how good a case study looks. The lesson across all of it: earn attention, protect trust, and create something worth coming back for.
